What do I want my child to achieve?
After completing grade 12, your child will:

Have achieved a high proficiency in English.

Have retained his or her own cultural identity.

Be functionnally fluent in French, that is:

be able to live, work and pursue postsecondary education in French.

have an understanding and appreciation of francophone culture.

Be better able to appreciate other languages, cultures and communities throughout Canada and around the world.

What approach is used?
French is used as the language of instruction for a significat part of each school day: several or all subjects (except English Language Arts and Religious Studies).
Begins with a period of concentration on French language development to give students a sufficient understanding of French to:
- learn to read,
- learn other subjects such as math, science, social studies, the fine arts, etc. taught in French.
School and extra-curricular activities in French may be used to support the development of language skills and cultural appreciation.
The language of commnuication between home and school is English.

Is it for my child?

The program is designed for a child whose family heritage is other than French.

At what grade level can my child begin?

Our schools offer French Immersion beginning in Kindergarten or Grade 1.

What about English?

The Alberta milieu provides ample opportunity for your child to develop his or her English.
Reading and writing skills are the same in both languages. Once learned, they are easily transferred from one language to the other.
French Immersion students take the same English Language Arts program as all other Alberta students and are expected to achieve the same standards.
